The ADCC put on another great event entitled Design London. The event showcased work from eight of London’s top design studios and reached its high point with guest speaker Tony Brook (Creative Director of Spin).

Toronto was graced by Brook’s straight up, down to earth talk revolving around his upbringing, the London design scene, his design studio, publishing company Unit Editions and his new book Spin 360˚. Not only did he have the audience engaged when he mentioned that he had let go a high profiled client and downsized his studio to focus purely on design centered work, but also had us participate in critiquing one of his identity projects which was pretty cool. And best of all, Tony Brook took loads of questions and really seemed to enjoy himself as he engaged in lengthy discussions with many participants.

The exhibit was just as inspiring and featured a plethora of posters and books from participating studios such as Pentagram, North, Studio Fernando Gutiérrez, David Pearson, A Practice for Everyday Life, Morag Myerscough, Bibliothèque, and Spin. The calibre of work was impressive.

We had the pleasure of meeting Tony Brook, who is truly one of the nicest, down to earth, people you will ever meet, with out a doubt.

Design Barcelona was a very special event held by the ADCC in Toronto. The Creative Director at Mucho, Pablo Juncadella, talked about the design community in Barcelona and how many of the designers/studios are close knit and connected. The event also showcased an exhibition of work that featured participating studios from Barcelona including: Alex Trochut, Atlas, Folch Studio, Hey Studio, Lo Siento Studio, Mario Eskenazi, and Mucho.

Brilliant event! The work coming out of Barcelona is amazing.

Barcelona is a wonderful city, a place were creativity is celebrated. It was good to see a design community so connected with culture and one another. Hopefully we can take note from Barcelona to strengthen our design community here in Toronto.

Brand New Conference, 2014
September 25 and 26
Harris Theater at Millennium Park, Chicago, USA
The Brand New Conference was a two-day event on corporate and brand identity featuring some of today’s most active and influential practitioners from around the world.

It was typotherapy’s first time attending the Brand New Conference. And the fifth annual event by UnderConsideration did not disappoint. The conference opened with heavy weight designer, Lance Wyman, (known for such work as the logo of the Mexico 1968 Summer Olympic Games) who left us all speechless and inspired. The conference also featured design icons such as Mario Eskenazi and design thinkers like Adrian Shaughnessy.

The highlights included Mario Eskenazi, Lance Wyman (Lance Wyman Ltd.), Jim Bull (Moving Brands), Adrian Shaughnessy (Intro, Unit Editions), Sebastian Padilla (Anagrama), and the energetic Mark Kingsley (Malcontent).

We also had the pleasure of meeting the ever so humble Lance Wyman, the incredible Mario Esikenazi, as well as Adrian Shaughnessy and Mark Kingsley.

Overall a fabulous event set in the wondrous city of Chicago.

2013 AGI Open
September 26 and 27
The Barbican, London, UK
typotherapy had the pleasure of attending the 2013 AGI Open in London, hands down graphic design’s most high-profiled annual international conference.

This conference dubbed “the world cup of graphic design” featured over 40 of the world’s leading graphic designers, illustrators and creative thinkers—all members of the protégés Alliance Graphique International (AGI).

The conference bestowed engaging dialogue, motivational stories and captivating discussions from self-initiated projects to obsession and inspiration; all in sync with impressive mind-boggling designs projected throughout the auditorium.

Our highlights were, Ian Anderson (Designers Republic), Tony Brook (Spin, Unit Editions), Adrian Shaughnessy (Intro, Unit Editions), Peter Saville, Stefan Sagmeister (Sagmeister & Walsh), Paula Scher (Pentagram), Nick Bell (Nick Bell Design), Jonathon Jeffrey (bibliothèque), Margaret Calvert, and the brief appearance from Vaughan Oliver (V23).

The entire event was brilliant, and not to mention it was incredible to be in the same room with our design idols.

Without a doubt, this was the best graphic design conference we’ve ever been to, immersed in one of the finest cities in the world.
